Fort Campbell Family Housing (FCFH) and the U.S. Department of the Army has started the initial planning and development stage for the first Zero-Energy Home (ZEH) being built on a military installation. |
Two baseline Zero-Energy Homes will be the centerpiece of a redevelopment initiative bringing 521 new homes to Fort Campbell's Woodlands community. The homes are scheduled for completion in 2010.
The ZEH buildings will be the first duplex residences expressly designed and built as Zero-Energy Homes on a military installation. The homes will incorporate climate-specific design elements, passive solar heating and cooling, and energy-efficient construction. Careful consideration of ventilation, insulation, and air infiltration moisture barriers will also be employed. Homes will come equipped with the most advanced Energy StarŪ appliances, and feature “real time” energy monitoring devices to help residents understand how the home systems are performing, and keep efficiency at the Zero-Energy level.
“Fort Campbell’s Zero-Energy Homes are the result of a strong commitment and alliance with our DoD partner to set new benchmarks for sustainable energy efficiency in the communities that we build,” said Fort Campbell Family Housing Development Manager, Patrick Tahaney. “We are excited to move forward with building these state-of-the-art, energy efficient homes which will not only offer our residents all the amenities and space they deserve, but also have a positive impact on the environment.”
